Let me guess — you wash up every morning, step out of the shower, and immediately feel like your skin needs a drink of water. You're not imagining it. And you're not just "dry skinned." Your body wash is most likely stripping your skin faster than any lotion can fix it.
I know because I've been there. And it's exactly why I started making soap.
So What's Actually Happening?
Your skin has a natural moisture barrier — a thin layer of oils, lipids, and good bacteria that keeps water in and irritants out. When that barrier is intact, your skin feels soft, comfortable, and balanced.
Most body washes are formulated with sulfates — specifically Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These are synthetic detergents designed to create aggressive lather and cut through oil. The problem? They don't discriminate. They strip the dirt AND the natural oils your skin actually needs to stay moisturized.
Wash with a sulfate-heavy body wash twice a day and your moisture barrier never gets a chance to recover. That tight, dry, uncomfortable feeling after every shower? That's your barrier being disrupted over and over again.
The Three Main Culprits
1. Sulfates (SLS/SLES)
The biggest offender. They create the satisfying lather you're used to — but they take your skin's natural moisture right along with the dirt. If it's in the first five ingredients, your skin is paying the price.
2. Synthetic Fragrance
"Fragrance" or "parfum" on a label can represent dozens of undisclosed chemicals — many of which are known skin irritants that compromise your moisture barrier over time. Smells great. Does your skin no favors.
3. Alcohol-Based Ingredients
Some body washes contain drying alcohols that further strip the skin's surface. You'll see them listed as Denatured Alcohol or Alcohol Denat. They evaporate fast — and they take your moisture with them.
What to Use Instead
Here's the honest truth — no amount of lotion will fix this if you keep using a cleanser that strips your skin twice a day. You have to fix the source.
A cold process handmade soap bar made with real plant-based oils — like olive oil, almond oil, or cocoa butter — cleanses gently without disrupting your moisture barrier. And unlike most body washes, handmade soap retains its natural glycerin during production. Glycerin is a humectant — it draws moisture to your skin. Commercial manufacturers typically remove it and sell it separately. Your bar soap is working against you before you even step out of the shower.
